Maria Birnbaum holds a PhD from the European University Institute (EUI), Florence, with the thesis Becoming recognizable. Postcolonial independence and the reification of religion. She is currently a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Oslo.
Her work has been funded by the European Research Council (ERC), the Norwegian Research Council and the Buffett Center for Comparative and International Studies. Research interests include: International Relations Theory, Colonial History, The History of Political Thought, International Politics of Religion and Culture. Recent publications include Exclusive Pluralism (Brill), Religion: Concepts in World Politics (Sage), and Emerging International Subjects (Routledge).
