Thomas Cavanaugh is Professor of Philosophy at the University of San Francisco. His most recent work is entitled Double-Effect Reasoning: Doing Good and Avoiding Evil (Clarendon Press, 2006) and he is currently completing a book entitled Hippocrates Oath and Asclepius’ Snake, which argues that at the heart of the Western medical ethic is a profound concern to separate the role of healing from that of wounding.
